About Steve Padilla

Steve has been fighting for his beloved hometown of Chula Vista so long, he’s made history doing it – a few times. Steve was Chula Vista’s first Latino Mayor and first openly LGBT person to serve in city office.


  • Steve is a native of San Diego and a lifelong Chula Vista resident.

  • A former police detective, Steve kept our community safe by tracking down child abusers and taking illegal guns off the street.

  • A COVID-19 survivor, Steve is fighting for access to quality, affordable healthcare and testing, PPE, small business support, and public health funding for our most vulnerable communities.

  • When he served as Mayor, Steve cleaned up the Bayfront, created the University and Innovation Center, and added new parks all over town.

  • Steve passed Chula Vista's Climate Action Plan to reduce pollution, improve community health and achieve 100% clean energy.

  • Steve is honored to serve as Chairman of our state's Coastal Commission which protects coastal resources and access to the coast for all. The commission controls land use on our precious coast and Steve is committed to defending California’s beautiful coast and fighting for the clean air, water and climate our kids deserve. 


Steve is a graduate of Bonita Vista High and Southwestern College. He earned undergraduate degrees in both Liberal Arts and Public Administration and studied law at WSU College of Law. Steve lives in Otay Ranch is the proud father of an amazing daughter, Ashleigh.
